Study shows British women are increasingly into online gambling


A recent study by the UK Gambling Commission revealed that online gambling has become more popular among women. The study shows that 42% of women in the UK have participated in some form of gambling in the past 4 weeks.

British women love betting on the National Lottery online

The National Lottery was the most popular form of betting for women and scratch cards and bingo were also included in the mix. However, the trend of going online to bet on the lottery has recently increased and female bettors, especially those over the age of 35, are beginning to participate in other forms of online gambling.

Even though the UKGC says online gambling is becoming “increasingly popular among women of all ages”, the most active group is women aged 35-54, as 32% of them are likely to participate in gambling activities. Additionally, the rate of online gambling among this group increased by 8% between 2017 and 2021. As for younger women, they are more likely to bet more privately.

A recent study by GambleAware even revealed that up to 1 million UK women could be at risk of gambling, as the number of participants at online casinos and bingo sites increased over the winter months.

GambleAware also found that a majority of women don’t even seek treatment as two in five don’t want to because of embarrassment and stigma. Additionally, online gambling activity increases by around 29% between December and March, which is why GambleAware believes the danger is acute during the winter.

Liz Karter, an expert on female gambling addiction in the UK, said that gambling addiction manifests differently in women compared to men. Karter explained that hopes for financial gain can be a huge motivator.

Gambling hazard rates for women are lower than hazard rates for men

While talking about safer gambling, the UKGC noted that the gambling risk rate for women is between 0.2% and 0.9%, while the figure is 1.4% for men. In response to GambleAware’s findings, the UKGC said it would conduct further research into the impact of gambling on women’s mental health and added that the survey would be conducted frequently.

As for the games themselves, YouGov data, which was released in mid-2021, shows that 72% of women are likely to buy lottery tickets, while that number for men is 58. %. Women also prefer to play bingo or keno online (6% for women and 2% for men). Men eclipse women in sports betting since 45% of them are willing to bet on a sport, while this number for women is 23%.
