The Pune City Police Social Security Cell raided eight online gambling dens run under the guise of lottery and video game centers in the Bibwewadi area. Saturday’s raids also led to the arrest of 42 people.
Several cell teams raided the dens and seized more than Rs 19 lakh, including cash, bicycles and tools used for online gambling. The police arrested 94 people, including owners of these lottery and video game centers, archivists employed in the stores and some people who came to gamble.
Detectives from the Criminal Branch’s Social Security Cell had received information that eight stores in Bibwewadi, which were licensed to sell state-licensed lottery tickets and also as video game centers, were operating rackets of online gambling. While simultaneous raids were being carried out on these stores, three similar stores were raided in the Kondhwa area on July 23.
The police investigation suggests that the racketeers used various online gambling apps, including Matka’s. Those who came to place bets on specific numbers wrote their bets on a sheet of plastic, then took a picture of it before erasing the number. The results were then extracted using a computer or phone game application. Thus, there was virtually no evidence or paper trail.
