Province of Ontario Begins Regulated Online Gambling

On Monday, Canada’s most populous province launched regulated online casino and online sports betting.

iGaming Ontario, which oversees the new market on behalf of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, said 13 online gaming brands have entered the market.

“This is a monumental day that positions Ontario as an international leader in online gaming,” said Martha Otton, General Manager of iGaming Ontario.

“After years of anticipation culminating in landmark legislation followed by months of hard work by all stakeholders, we have achieved the launch today of a legal internet gambling market outside of its status as earlier gray market.”

Online gambling sites that went live included 888, Bet365, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars, FanDuel, LeoVegas, among others.

“We appreciate all the effort and resources these site operators have put into becoming our first market entrants,” the regulator added.

Ontario’s legal commercial iGaming market is the first of its kind in Canada.

The province has a population of about 14.5 million, the lion’s share of Canada’s total population of about 38 million.

States like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New York, all of which border Ontario, each have legal online gambling in one form or another.
