ACMA to block illegal online lottery services

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) will today call on Australian Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block illegal offshore lottery sites We Love Lotto and Red Fox Lotto.

Authority member Fiona Cameron said the two websites would be the first lottery sites blocked in Australia after ACMA investigations found they were offering tickets to major online lotteries in Australia. foreign and are not permitted in Australia, which is prohibited by the Interactive Gambling Act 2001.

“We Love Lotto and Red Fox Lotto are both operating illegally in Australia, which means there is no consumer protection in place for players,” Ms. Cameron said.

“Blocking illegal offshore sites protects Australians from potentially shady operators, where there is little or no recourse if something goes wrong. Lottery services licensed in Australia and operating legally come with important guarantees that consumers have come to expect. “

Although these are the first lottery services to be blocked, ACMA has been asking ISPs to block illegal casino-type gambling sites since November 2019.

A report released today shows that in fiscal year 2020-21, ACMA targeted 55 services for site blocking, the majority of which resulted in a drop in Australian visitors of at least 90%.

“We are very pleased with the outcome and it shows that the measures we are taking to tackle illegal online gambling in Australia have had a positive impact,” said Ms Cameron.

Information on how consumers can protect themselves from illegal gambling operators is available on the ACMA website.
